Frere Camp Natal reports a force from Chievelry with 2000 charges and two guns in a forenoon reconnaissance to locate the enemy on a hill south of Hlangwano. Several shells were fired with naval gun support, the enemy replying at long range but not hitting the British. Lord Dendoval directed the force to move toward Ubiveley.
Fire in the Merchants and Planters Tobacco warehouse burns about a third of a city block in Richmond. Eight thousand eight hundred hogsheads of tobacco stored there, including two thousand owned by American Tobacco Company. The blaze destroys the building and contents, with further damage to adjacent plants. Total loss estimated at 400000 dollars with 350000 dollars insured.
A major fire in Portland destroyed the F C Bailey Carriage Repository and threatened adjacent buildings. The five story brick structure housed harnesses, sleighs, carriages, and packing cases valued in the tens of thousands, with overall losses estimated at 75 000 dollars though much insured. Firefighters faced live wires and limited visibility as they battled the blaze from Market to Middle streets, aided by a fireboat and New England crews. Postmaster Swett and city officials coordinated efforts to protect the post office and surrounding stock as the fire raged through the night.
Newport News Virginia January 5 a white man named William W Watts was lynched by a mob after being captured while fleeing a train. He was bound to a stake and shot multiple times after assaulting Mrs Thomas M Simpson whom he had befriended days earlier. The mob dispersed the rope used to bind him and vanished. authorities pursue suspects.
London dispatch reports no decisive operations in South Africa at 450 am. Military activity is confined to subsidiary points. In the central theater the Turks appear to have gained nothing substantial. The only dramatic note concerns the Oshelalantry sortie at Mafeking where stormers failed against a well defended Boer work. Contraband seizures dominate public thought and the possibility of continental intervention is discussed. The government enforces the right of search with detailed instructions to naval forces. In South African waters, measures to suppress contraband via Delagoa Bay are upheld.
