Pomona California December 25 a broken wheel on the engine of the Los Angeles bound local caused a wreck. One person died and several were badly injured with many others suffering serious wounds. The coach overturned and caught fire leaving unnamed dead and a list of casualties including residents such as Monroe Mrs Rose O sor Milian.
The battleship Texas reached Newport News with the dead from the Maine disaster. Remains will be moved to a Chesapeake and Ohio train for transfer to Washington. In Arlington cemetery, ceremonies are planned after arrival at midnight. Chaplain Fr Caldwick will accompany the bodies.
Remains of the Maine victims arrive in Washington and will be interred at Arlington cemetery Thursday at eleven in a ceremony led by President McKinley with cabinet members and military officers present. From Pretoria December 17 Sunday an official account of the battle near Tugela and Colenso describes heavy fire from Boer positions. British attempts failed with many casualties and cannon losses. ambulances moved the dead and wounded as Botha and Trighard directed fierce fighting. Churchill escape and other items cited amid war coverage.
London, December 25. For the first time in thirteen years, Queen Victoria and the royal family spent Christmas day at Windsor with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and princes Henry of Battenburg’s children. A grand beef feast and a splendid Christmas tree lit the rooms while the Queen urged joy for her grandchildren, despite sorrow in her own heart. The holidays reflected fidelity to empire and a hopeful view of its future under her reign.
Mrs Harriet Alsop alias Briggs and Myre and Albert Over died in Lowell after a fire sparked by alcohol intoxication. Alsop sat herself on fire and Mrs Vorter’s clothing caught when a lamp tipped over, the blaze occurring late Sunday night at St John’s hospital reported this morning.

In Brooklyn a family dinner ended in tragedy when Charles Haffner, intoxicated, attacked seats and furniture during Christmas meal. His son Harry, in a fit of fear, fatally stabbed his father with a large knife, killing him before ambulance crews arrived. Mercy was arrested.

Bushrod Underwood famed for service in the Army of Northern Virginia died in Washington today aged 63.
A man known as Stanislaw Lezzinski died after a wandering end on a Sunday. Police report head wounds described as blows. Two witnesses told police a story leading to Barlow’s arrest. A witness was interviewed in Lynn and Lowell. Investigators say Marlow admits being with Lezzinski until about 1 o'clock Wednesday night.
Manua December 24 9 a m Gen Young named military governor of the northwestern Luzon provinces with headquarters at Vigan. He commands the thirty third infantry under Col Luther K R Hare and the third cavalry and will set up stations at San Francisco and Laoag with outposts as needed. The sixteenth cavalry moves to Apari to garrison towns in Cagayan Isabela and Nuevo Vizcaya. Col Hood named military governor there. Civil municipal governments are being established and northern Luzon ports to open for trade around January 1.
