At the Lewiston meeting of the board of agriculture on December 11 delegates from most counties attended. Farmers institutes were discussed and reports indicated higher attendance and greater interest this year. Secretary McKeen noted average attendance exceeding prior years.
The condition of Lieut. Brumby, Admiral Dewey s lieutenant, worsened tonight. He grew unconscious toward midnight and physicians were consulted. A telegram was sent for a Baltimore fever specialist to attend to the lieutenant s illness.
Agnes William, a colored wife of a local barber, was slain in the back bedroom of the barber shop in Burlington prompting the arrest of Gilbert Farmer on suspicion. In Washington, Senator Hoar of Massachusetts introduced a joint resolution proposing submission of a constitutional amendment to state legislatures.
The text states that the term of the President and the ith Congress shall not expire until the last Wednesday in April 1901 and that henceforth such terms shall expire on the last Wednesday in April instead of March 4.
