An old advertisement promotes Mrs Winslow's Soothing Syrup and various tonics claiming over thirty to fifty years of use. It touts the signature brands Caras WH Feerecame and other names, urging readers to ask local druggists for Mrs Winslow's Soothing Syrup, 25 cents per bottle, for teething relief and bowel regulation.
Nearly seventy five militia members practiced at Stroud water range with good scores. All city county and government offices closed. A barber recalls Brown Thurston after 55 years of service. Dyer house on Commercial street quarantined for smallpox with guard. Salvation Army held services at Fore and Silver. A large photograph of Attorney General Haines arrives at Falmouth hotel. Custom house officials visited Long Island for a Fast Day practice. Open Congress meets at Church of the Messish to discuss Nicaragua Canal. The late Brown Thorator’s towers set for Saturday at 9 from his State street home. Rev Smith Baker D conducted Sunday school prep at M C A ball. Mr Lewis Malvern and family to move to 16 Brackett street by June. Free Street Baptist Men’s Club hears Gen Chamberlain on Surrender of Gen LDS.
Manager Stewart of the Elder Dempster line returned from a long business trip in Montreal. Lord, long prominent in civic life, is visiting his sister in the city at age 90 and remains active. Others mentioned include Charles B. Baker Jr of Chicago visiting his father, and Harry Levy of Broadway Comedians. Pastor W H Fenn plans a southern trip, with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert W. Hitch to Washington followed by travel in Boston with Mrs. Hitch joining in.
The many friends of Miss Gertrude D. O Malley will be pained to hear of her death which took place early last evening at her parents residence 45 Cotton Street. Miss O Malley was quite a favorite among her young friends and will be deeply mourned by them. Her funeral will take place Saturday morning.
The steamer Salacia of the Donaldson Life arrived at 10 yesterday morning direct from Glasgow via tech. Two stowaways were found and sent to the police. A cargo of about 200 tons was brought. The Strathnevie of Elder Dempster is expected early next week from the Canary Islands. The crowd overflowed the coran steamer wharves as people viewed the Tunisian. Desmond fell from the Grand Trunk wharf and was rescued by boys. Two big coalers, John Randall and George K Walcott, also arrived.
South Portland reports a cloudy day of fast observance with a field day canceled due to rain. Cape Elizabeth railroad resumes summer cars for visitors, Major Geyford injured unloading at Trott's wharf, and farming, timbering, and grain distribution trends affect local markets. Easter services at Knightville attract large crowds, Veterans association reshapes leadership, Memorial Sunday plans laid, and Azalis club hosts a Fast Day reception with several members listed.
The Goddard property and part of the Thompson property adjacent to Cape Cottage grounds have been transferred to the United States Government to enlarge Fort Williams. The final payment of about $50,000 has been completed, with Judge Symonds receiving $33,553 and Thompson landowners receiving $16,006.
Principal Chase assigns class parts for this year's graduating class. salutatorian Samuel F. Dans and valedictorian Mies H. Mabel Andrews lead. two essays for the young ladies and two for the young men. Nellie T. Phelan and Eva M. Anderson present the first and second essays by the girls. Harold Everett and Charles J. Chapman present the first and second essays by the boys. Graduation exercises are set for the last Wednesday in June.
At the Portland Gun Club annual meeting a three trap Sergeant system was approved to complement the five trap Keystone setup. A committee was named to plan the August state shoot. A 25-member party led by Mrs Fogg visited Underwood Park for a social afternoon after favorable travel along the Portland Yarmouth electric line.
The Wheel club, numbering 95, rode out to Poland's landing at Falmouth Foreside yesterday afternoon but conditions were muddy and no athletic events were held. They had a good dinner despite the wet grounds.
It was a quiet day in the city with most saloons closed for a holiday. Only one man faced arrest for intoxication during the 44 hours. The patrol wagon driver enjoyed a day of rest.
