Obituary notices for Sonny Davis and Joe Hamilton
Remains of Sonny Davis, famed area cowboy and steer roper, re interred at Kenna Cemetery on June 12 2004 after dying April 14 1991 at 56. Three time World Champion Steer Roper, posthumously inducted into Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1993. Survivors include wife Janie and daughters Trudi and Debi plus granddaughter Dana. Services held with Rev Beil and Charles Good officiating. Arrangements by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Also obituary for Joe Hamilton of Clovis who died June 25 2004 aged 75. He was born August 21 1928 in Altus Oklahoma, served in US Army, worked as seismologist and at Furrs Grocery, later retired in Clovis. Survived by wife Billie, three sisters and several nieces and nephews. Services set for 2 pm Monday at 16th & Pile Church of Christ in Clovis with burial at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Steed Todd Funeral Home. Obituary policy notes no charge for publishing and that funeral-home information is used.

Buffalo Soldier Hill renamed after clearing racist label
In July 1877 a pursuit ended at a hill known as Nigger Hill where about 20 Buffalo Soldiers died. Robinson of Eastern New Mexico University led a push to rename the site Buffalo Soldier Hill after a new book highlighted the tragedy. On April 15 a state committee approved a historical marker east of Lingo, spurring community support and a four hour drive by Arthur Embers of Vernon Texas to attend the ceremony with the Tenth Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers involved.
