The city of Portales offers five weekly water conservation tips. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues insects and other waste in the trash. When washing dishes by hand fill one sink with soapy water. Quickly rinse under a slow moving stream from the faucet. Store drinking water in the refrigerator. Water lawns during early morning hours. Mulch around plant beds to retain soil moisture.
Two adjacent fires in the San Gabriel Mountains about 20 miles northeast of Los Angeles remained uncon tained as they merged to cover more than eight square miles.

The 32nd annual Heritage Days in Portales drew an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 attendees over two days. The car show counted 62 vehicles and about 70 people participated in the barrel races.
