Roo sevelt County prepares to mark 100 years with Heritage Days events starting Friday at the Memorial Building and City Park. The Rough Rider Challenge offers a $500 prize in a 50 yard peanut sack, horse ride, milk drink, and peanut butter sandwich finish. open to ages 16 plus with a $20 entry fee. Local officials emphasize community spirit and large participation prospects.
The city hosts Heritage Days at City Park with a Friday timetable including a Pioneer reception at Memorial Building and a Christian concert followed by a Roosevelt Restaurant dance. On Saturday, events start with a Rough Rider Motorcycle Rally and a parade from Eastern New Mexico University to City Park, plus park activities, GeoCaching, antique tractor games, youth relays, and a Roosevelt Rough Rider challenge and motorcycle games ending with a 6:30 p.m. Christian concert.
Residents of Clovis and Portales celebrate soldiers from Cannon Air Force Base with a Main Street parade watched by about 1000 troops. Colorful squadron cars, ribboned lamp posts, and a park festival followed, honoring service members and their families with strong local support.
Cannon Air Force Base celebrated a homecoming with Col. Robert Yates praising mission success in Iraq while honoring fallen and missing airmen. Four CAFB honor guard members carried a black flag as a taped tribute recalled prisoners of war and those missing in action.
