The city of Portales lists five weekly water conservation tips. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues and other waste in the trash. When washing dishes by hand, use a soapy sink and rinse under a slow-flow faucet. Store drinking water in the refrigerator and water lawns in the early morning. Mulch around plant beds to retain soil moisture.

The 32nd annual Heritage Days in Portales drew Roosevelt County residents with a lineup of children’s activities including bouncy castles water balloon fights and a climbing wall along with games. City Park hosted food vendors live music and a Pioneer of the Year award while the event ran alongside Portales High School reunions a 5K and 10K run and a parade. James Gibson visiting from Borger Texas enjoyed the games calling the event pretty much perfect and claiming Brownie the stuffed bunny after a fishing game. Joselyne Hertel and Lacey Little shared positive notes about pre festivity parades ponies and funnel cake during the festival.@
Madison Belcher, 16, won Miss New Mexico's Outstanding Teen at the Miss New Mexico teen pageant finals. Sharron Melton hosted, praising youth achievement as Sasha Butcher encouraged contestants to pursue their goals.
Friday night at ENMU Theatre Center the Miss New Mexico preliminaries selected five winners including three outstanding teens and two Miss contestants. Madison Belcher tied with Misa Tran for talent honors, Abbi Roe of Roswell won lifestyle and fitness, and Sharron Melton announced two Miss preliminary victors: Miss Otero County and another winner.
The pageant announced category winners including Miss Albuquerque Stephanie Chavez as talent winner and Miss Duke City Ashley Fresquez as talent winner. Swimsuit honors went to Brandy Blair and Miss Otero County with additional Miss Albuquerque recognition noted.
