Linda Miller-Brown of Floyd sings bluegrass at City Park during Heritage Days. Her local group, jokingly calling themselves The Perfect Strangers, performs on Saturday afternoon.
At Portales City Park the 27th annual Heritage Days featured bluegrass, fried potatoes and games. Pioneers of the Year Melvin and Marie Littlejohn and Joe Blair were honored. Krista Avritt named 2011 Roosevelt County Fair Princess and Courtney Hardin 2011 Fair Sweetheart.
Bobby Garcia of Portales works as a parts coordinator for Southwest Canners and volunteers as a coach for the Indians Little League team. He cites his love of baseball and his son Seth Garcia on the team as motivation.
The Clovis Portales Kennel Club hosts agility trials from 7 45 a m to 5 p m at the Curry County Events Center in Clovis. Admission is free. Information provided.
Portales recorded more motor vehicle thefts in the last year, up four from 2009, but still half of the 28 incidents reported in 2006 by the Portales Police Department.
Wendel Sloan recalls his father Guy Sloan a Mt. Vernon man who worked as a steel mill carpenter at Lone Star Steel in east Texas. He died after a four year battle with asbestosis on Father's Day weekend.
