Portales city issues five weekly tips for residents to save water. Tips include turning off the faucet while brushing teeth and shaving, limiting showers to five minutes, installing a low flow shower head, and washing clothes only with full loads.

New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez urges cities and counties to discuss a possible local fireworks ban due to high winds dry conditions and heat as Portales enforces a partial ban on missile rockets per city ordinance. Fire Chief Gary Nuckols notes Portales already bans some fireworks but stops short of a full ban.
Kathryn Kincheloe, 19, entered the Miss New Mexico spring workshop at Eastern New Mexico University and now competes for the state title this week. She aimed to boost shark conservation awareness, noting seven were crowned at the April workshop. Madison Belcher, 15, also champions agricultural education.
Belcher on farming ties and connecting people to food. Leah Taylor, Miss Quay County, promotes breast cancer awareness after her grandmother’s early diagnosis. Kathryn Kincheloe, Miss Roosevelt County, focuses on sharks awareness. Isabelle Morrow, Miss Dona Ana County, says fellow contestants support each other in pageant prep.
Portales High School Principal Mark Gormley urged a change to graduation by recognizing all students with 4.0 GPAs as Ram Honor Graduates at the 2020 ceremony. He says the plan reduces stress and competition for valedictorian and salutatorian while stressing recognition of top performers.
