Roosevelt County Bans Fireworks Including Aerial Devices
At a Roosevelt County Commission meeting a resolution limits sale and use of fireworks countywide. Portales Fire Department Chief Gary Nuckols cites state statute granting bans on aerial and ground audible devices which the city of Portales already enforces. Aerial devices such as shell kit reloadables spinners helicopters mines and rockets are prohibited. ground items like chasers and firecrackers are banned. Only ground and hand held sparkling devices fountains crackling devices ground spinners and similar items remain allowed within the city and county.

Portales Elementary Students Boost Reading Skills This Summer
Nearly 100 Portales elementary students start a month long reading program at James Elementary School to sharpen literacy beyond the school year. Principal Mark Gormley says the effort helps students who fall back during May to August break.

ENMU reports Guadalupe Hall the new 308 bed freshman dormitory is on track for completion by October with move in for freshmen planned January 2013 for spring semester.
