The Negro People in Calhoun County Part II
Calhoun County's black history traces from Spanish and Mexican eras through the 19th century. Census records show enslaved populations in La Bahia and Victoria County, with many enslaved people serving urban roles in Lavaca, Indianola, and Indianola. The narrative covers emancipation impact, labor roles on steamers, longshore work, and runs of slave narratives, ending with a note on Methodism's rocky path.
