August Buchel A Calhoun County Militia Leader
August Buchel arrived in Indianola in 1845 at age 30 aboard the schooner New York and raised a German emigrant company in Calhoun County. A veteran of European wars and the Mexican War, he served under Gen. Taylor at Buena Vista and later commanded the Third Texas Infantry and First Texas Cavalry, with a noted social life in Matamoros. He died after Mansfield in 1864 and left a marked grave funded by Texas taxpayers, remaining a government welfare recipient to the end.

Americans in Mexican jails face abuse and protests rise
Sixty-one Americans jailed in Mexico this year have been physically abused, some with cattle prods, the State Department says. Deputy Secretary Luers calls the mistreatment a serious problem, noting Mexican sovereignty sensitivities and continued violations during interrogation. As of June 1, 603 Americans were confined in Mexican jails, including 490 on drug charges, with 334 arrests and 249 releases since Jan 1.
