Supreme Court says mentally ill patients have right to treatment
The Supreme Court ruled that states may not keep harmless mental patients in confinement without treatment. Justice Stewart stated that mental illness alone cannot justify indefinite custodial confinement, and that treatment is required when patients are involuntarily confined but pose no danger. The ruling, a victory for the Mental Health Law Project and DOJ positions, could hasten moves from large state hospitals to community centers for about 250,000 patients.
