Parole granted for Caril Fugate after 18 years in prison

Caril Ann Fugate, once linked to Charles Starkweather killings, will be released June 20 after an 18 year prison term. The Nebraska Parole Board voted 4 to 1 to grant parole. She will report to a parole officer in St. Johns Michigan and may face a planned effort to provide a new identity. Fugate expressed a wish to lead an ordinary life, marry, and raise a family, while Starkweather remained a central figure in the case lingering over her release.

A historical account surveys how enslaved and free Black people survived emancipation in Texas. It covers 1850 and 1860 census figures, laws on freeing or selling free Negroes, passing as white, and notable individuals and episodes tied to Calhoun County and Lavaca Bay. It notes Mexican law, intermarriage, and legends of Black Texans connected to the Alamo, Goliad, San Jacinto, and local figures such as Jim Prim and Henry McCullough.
