The Freebooter Aury on Matagorda Bay
Aury established a Texan war fleet on Matagorda Bay in 1817 with an earthen fort on Galveston Island and a flag denoting Mexican Republic rule. He governed briefly, practiced daily drills, and attracted up to 500 men before abandoning the fort in 1817 18. Reports note Spanish oversight and unclear final resting place of Aury or his fort.
