Hurricane landfall forecast aids oil firms in Texas
Texas A&I University professor Dr. Marcus M. Truitt has developed HULAP, a computerized hurricane landfall probability system. Supported by about $14,000 in grants, it mirrors past storms to predict present paths, enabling oil firms like Trunkline to coordinate offshore rig shutdowns and crew safety with Texas A&I serving as the monitoring hub. The program runs hourly forecasts and is slated for efficiency improvements, as Houston-Galveston remains a high risk coastal area.
