Morning Markets Fall As Inflation Worries Rage
New York trading slipped as inflation fears persisted and recovery outlook remained uncertain. The noon Dow dropped 3.94 to 340.44 after Friday’s 7.71 decline. NYSE losers outpaced gainers roughly two to one amid reports of 84 percent November price gains and durable goods orders plunging since last March. Carrier Corp led activity, and NYSE composite fell two points while Amex index eased. Trading volume shrank to 640 million shares in two hours. Analysts cited a weekend congressional staff warning that the recovery could stall by 1977 without policy changes. National Kinney held steady as Amex’s volume leader.
