Texas Shrimp Industry Faces Phaseout in Mexican Waters
Texas shrimp industry leaders warn of hardship but expect survival as Mexican fishing access ends in 1980. Robert G. Mauermann of the Texas Shrimp Association says a three and a half year phase-out may yield a better treaty, while US consumers should not notice price or supply changes. 318 boats will fish under licenses and bonds, with licenses issued first come first served. 1975 Texas landings reached 44.2 million pounds worth 87.9 million, with Mexican waters contributing about 15 million pounds valued around 10 million. Immediate 40 percent cut in Mexican catches follows the treaty, and Mauermann calls the outcome the best possible given starting conditions.
