Drainage District OKs Easement Use Suit at Port Lavaca Area

Drainage commissioners authorized legal action to force two Highway 35 property owners, Thomas Mansfield and Leonard Fisher, to permit district crews on their land to clear Big Chocolate Bayou, after negotiations failed for 18 months. A gate is kept locked, and a straightened bayou option was deemed too costly. Also approved an easement for a road on spoil bank land owned by Joe and Ora Brett, connecting Westland Grade and Allie Brett properties. Budget notes cited about $720 left and possible cashing of a $10,000 CD to meet a required $25,000 reserve. Commissioners paid United Texas Transmission Co. $17,190 for three crossings after a reduction from $20,177. A erosion-spot proposal for Lynn's Bayou was deemed too expensive, and a meeting with the Corps of Engineers on a Lynn's Bayou retarding structure yielded no firm recommendation.
