Sales Tax Checks Mailed Across Texas Towns
Comptroller Bob Bullock announced 39.3 million in one percent city sales tax checks mailed to 865 Texas cities for June. Houston led with 7.5 million, Dallas 4.8 million, and Port Isabel 8,918.58. total rebates to date reach 167.1 million, up 15.1 percent. The release notes new exemptions: syringes and needles for medical use, newspapers and magazines, and motion picture film sales to theaters and stations.

Island Police Report May Activity Data
Island police logged 10 felonies and 31 misdemeanors in May under Chief Bob Park. Felonies included burglaries thefts and drug offenses while misdemeanors were led by disorderly conduct and public intoxication. 88 traffic tickets were issued and seven crashes occurred with four serious injuries. Police also handled 82 calls, aided the public 21 times, assisted other agencies nine times, and found open doors six times.

Laguna Heights woman dies in two-vehicle crash
A 60 year old Laguna Heights woman died Sunday when her 1960 Ford crossed the center line on Highway 100 one mile west of Port Isabel and collided with a 1971 Ford pickup driven by Philip Morris. Freddy Petty was treated and released for minor injuries. Morris sustained a broken leg. Funeral services are being handled in San Benito.
