South PadreAdds Fourth Police Officer And Ordinances
The South Padre Island Board hired a fourth policeman, Jim Barlow, who will begin July 1 after serving with Port Isabel Police since April 1974. The board also adopted two ordinances on security guards and indemnifying board members. Tourism tax funds were allocated with 20 percent for admin, 53 percent for national advertising, and 30 percent for reserves. A revival tent request by First Baptist Church of Port Isabel was tabled pending more liability coverage. The next meeting is July 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Cities Get Sales Tax Rebates For Port Isabel South Padre Island
Port Isabel received 5330.66 and South Padre Island 7971.08 in the third round of monthly city sales tax rebates. Comptroller Bob Bullock said larger payments reflect end-of-quarter taxes from merchants after the April 30 reporting deadline and noted the shift from quarterly to monthly rebates.

Deborah Ann Mauert daughter of Mr and Mrs Emry B Nauert of McAllen and South Padre Island earned a Registered Dental Hygienist degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Isle Phone Cable Permit Sought for Gulf Intracoastal Waterway
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company seeks Corps of Engineers authorization to lay submarine cables across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Laguna Madre near Port Isabel. Cables would be encased in a 28 inch conduit and trenching would backfill banks using dredged material. Public comments requested by July 7.

The U S Coast Guard chooses Raytheon Marine of Manchester New Hampshire to supply 106 Model 3100 Mariners Pathfinder radars for 41 foot utility craft. The radars undergo temperature and vibration tests and are to be installed this summer aboard vessels performing search and rescue and other missions.

Two Accidents Reported in Port Isabel
Two minor collisions drew police attention in Port Isabel last week. June 11 at 7 25 p m a parked car owned by Donald Loran Pruitt was struck on Powers Street by Melchor Salinas Jr who was cited for failure to keep vehicle under control. A second accident on the next day involved Yolanda Bermudez Arredondo cited for running a stop sign after her 1973 Matador hit Jose Felipe Brown’s 1972 Ford on Port Road Ash Street.
