Ochoa Named Chief of Police in Port Isabel
Laura Ochoa aged 44, after five years on the Port Isabel police force, was named chief at the City Commission meeting in the Municipal Building on June 14. The board accepted a $7,468 bid for a 43 horsepower 72 inch tractor mower from Wood Implement of San Benito. other bidders listed. The commission approved a $33,221 revenue sharing budget, with funds earmarked for a pound, converting part of the old City Hall into a health clinic, and constructing a garage for city vehicles. Nine street lights and five fire plugs were noted. several Urban Renewal land parcels sold, and former mayor Leo Sanders nominated to the Board of Equalization. The May police activity report cited 516 dispatches, 138 radar violations, and numerous traffic and other offenses. Next meeting set for June 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Representatives from the Texas Catastrophe Property Insurance Association say wind storm insurance will be available to property owners at an affordable rate in August. The pool formed after 1971 legislation and currently covers flood insurance for 14 Gulf Coast counties with more than 46 000 insured risks and over 1 billion dollars in force. Hurricane Celia in 1970 caused about 325 million in insured damage. another Celia today would yield higher losses due to inflation.

Mexico 200-mile fishing limit becomes law July 27

The Point Isabel Board voted to consider suits against itself for exemplary damages after rescinding Dr. James Latham’s three year contract effective July 1. Latham sues for 50,000 from all but one trustee, alleging 27,940 per year in damages and improper medical grounds for his leave.

Ridley Turtle Lays 90 Eggs On South Padre Island Beach
A Ridley sea turtle laid 90 eggs on South Padre Island beach on Saturday June 12 at about 10 30 am. Volunteers, led by Mrs Ida Loetscher, moved the nest to Ranchita Tortuga with a 54 day incubation and 24 hour watch. The nest lies 12 miles north of Andy Bowie Park in Ridley habitat.
