The 1975 76 school year will start with minimum $1 400 annual raises for all Port Isabel teachers. Experienced staff with advanced degrees may see increases up to $1 900. The boosts come from a new state school finance bill approved by the legislature.
The Port Isabel South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce held its installation banquet at Bahia Mar Hotel with about 120 attendees. Keynote speaker Al Cisneros urged teamwork and private enterprise to boost the region, while new officers including Helen Adams as president were installed by Rod Newburg.
The Board opened bids for 850 stadium seats with an alternate 200, plus additions at Garriga and Derry Elementary Schools. Sturdhsteel of Waco offered 21 300 base with 5 480 alternate. Brownsville firm 27 283 base with 6 571 alternate. Bids for Garriga Derry ranged from 240 870 base to 287 232 05 alternates. Award decision postponed to next meeting.
Jaycees set their annual installation banquet for Sandy Retreat on Saturday June 14 with a Get Acquainted Hour from 7 to 8 p.m. The evening features Master of Ceremonies Calvin Byrd and keynote speaker Moses Osborn, district PST A VP and Mission Teachers' Association president. Rod Newburg to install officers with Jaime Salazar presenting year awards.
The Port Isabel Post Office announces July 1 increases in box rentals as the Island office becomes first class. Small boxes rise from 4.40 to 25.00 annually. medium to large options jump to 30.00 40.00 and 50.00 respectively. Island rates up less due to no city carrier service. Residential delivery remains free via clutter box system.
The Coast Guard deploys a 22 site VHF FM radio network to deliver 24 hour distress and safety communications up to 20 miles offshore. It replaces CB use and supports direct air and shipboard links with channel guidelines and control bases in Port Isabel Port Mansfield Port Aransas Port O Connor and Corpus Christi.
