The Valley harvest nears completion with lower grade samples dominating. USDA data for the week ending September 5 shows 9,320 samples classed, 292,718 season total, and price averages for several grades with Strict Low Middling and lower grades in demand.
Tarpons host the Marine Military Academy Cadets in the 1969 season opener at Tarpon Field. MMA beat Mexico City 13 0 last Friday as Mike Johnson’s 80 yard interception return sparked the Cadets. Coach Jim Moses weighs lineup size and quarterback prospects for the Friday night clash.
The Coast Guard Academy begins its 1969 to 1970 appointment competition on December 6 with CEEB tests, accepting last CEE B results for the Class of 1974. Deadlines apply, requiring applications by December 15, 1969 and guidance counselor coordination for test arrangements.
Five local men were arrested by Cameron County deputies in Port Isabel on Tuesday for drunkenness. They appeared before Justice of the Peace Emmons and were fined amounts ranging from 15 to 50 dollars, with Nixon receiving the heaviest levy.
Port Isabel official Ted Hunt says he is not a candidate for county judge now and may consider it after Jan 1. He cites Judge Dancy's health, the addition of five new voting precincts for Precinct 1, and talks with Bud Emmons and Chet Tandy as factors shaping any future decision.
County Commissioner Adolph Thomas Jr stated there is no mechanism to remove a county official or halt pay during extended illness. He explained redistricting to balance voting strength and noted Judge Oscar Dancy has been absent from the courthouse for months, living in a rest home and hospitals, with duties covered by others and no salary cutoff unless a court acts. The judge could face removal action only through legal proceedings.
