The Point Isabel School System bond proposal for 2 million dollars failed at the polls with a light turnout. Of 2200 registered voters, 271 opposed and 229 supported the measure, with taxpayers opposing 250 to 192 in favor and 37 non taxpayers voting yes while 21 voted no.
Superintendent Ruben M Torres sets end of year dismissal for Derry and Garriga Elementary and the Jr Sr High. All grades released Thursday afternoon with kindergarten to third grade out at 2 00 p m and fourth through twelfth at 2 30 p m. The plan notes additions such as classrooms a library covered walks a field house a new band and choir building a new auditorium and an Olympic size facility.
Nelson Douglas Brett 19 of Harlingen and Pedro Galvan 22 of San Benito were arrested Saturday by Sheriff Deputy Johnny Joe Zamora on South Padre Island. They faced about one ounce of marijuana possession charges and were bonded at 1500 each after alcohol charges were dismissed. Both posted bond and were released. Brett did so the same day and Galvan the following day.

William H. Neukom was sworn in as the first mayor of South Padre Island with 83 votes in a four candidate field. Voter turnout reached 94 percent of 198 of 212. Ronalyn Adams won town marshal with 12 write ins. Four aldermen were elected: Larry Thompson 124, Troy Dillon 107, Betty Grisham 8, James Ghilain 79. fifth seat pending as Mary Lou Campbell and Phillip A Schoppe tied at 77 each necessitating a further election.
Laguna Madre Community Ambulance is back in service serving Port Isabel South Padre Island after repairs kept it offline for about two months. Police Chief Chuck Londrie urged more volunteers from Port Isabel and surrounding communities to ensure wider coverage. The unit previously relied on Los Fresnos and Brownsville for aid.
