A former Port Isabel resident, Wilbur Rodney Grayson Jr., 29, was shot three times by a student in an Austin classroom where he taught. The 13-year-old suspect, John Christian, is held as psychiatric evaluations proceed with prosecutors seeking possible state reform school detention if found sane. Funeral services for Grayson were held in Austin. he is survived by his wife Anna and a young son.

McAllen Man Struck By Car on South Padre Island
An 18 or 19 year old McAllen man riding a mini-trail bike not street legal was hit by a 1968 Plymouth at Park Road 100 and Hibiscus Street on South Padre Island. The rider remained in critical condition at Valley Community Hospital in Brownsville. No charges are expected against Roy David Hinojosa.

Funeral Services Set For Slain Patrolman Turner
Local funeral services for slain Port Isabel Patrolman James Ralph Turner age 29 are set for Friday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Turner was shot May 22 by Melchor Salinas 38 who faces capital murder charges with no bond. Salinas surrendered after a standoff following several gunshots, with Turner dying before aid arrived.

Austin reports the Gulf shrimp season will run June 1 to July 15 under Texas Parks and Wildlife rules. The brown shrimp, about 75 percent of Texas’ catch, spawn in spring and migrate to bays. the average harvest size must be four and a half inches. In 1977 the catch value was about 125.6 million dollars.

Mexican Shrimp Boat Detained For Illicit Fishing
The U S attorney has taken no action yet against Captain Manuel Ramon Garza Torres and crew after a Coast Guard detainment for fishing within the U S fisheries zone without a permit near South Padre Island. The vessel and one crewman were released on recognizance. three others to the Mexican Consulate. The boat awaits possible administrative seizure by the U S Marshall, with fines possible if found guilty. A Coast Guard spokesman said the boat showed fishery gear and moved to flee when stopped, and authorities kept the vessel under Coast Guard control until state department consent to seize was received.
