Wall Collapse At Port Isabel Gym Threatens Sixty Students
As rain drenched Port Isabel a gym wall collapsed trapping and terrifying students. Quick actions by coach Angel Gonzales and staff cleared floors and dressing rooms preventing injuries or deaths among about 60 students and staff. Seven men aided rescues amid shattered glass and falling concrete with Superintendent M. N. Caudill praising their decisive effort. Weather and floods accompanied the event with wind gusts reported and 4.22 inches of rain in two hours. The school planned final exams the next day and officials began investigations into the near-tragedy.
