The 39th annual Texas International Fishing Tournament will be held Aug. 3-7 with Sea Ranch Marina as HQ and weigh station. About 600 anglers from Texas, other states, Canada and Mexico compete in divisions for marlin, sailfish, tarpon, bay, surf and junior. Island Police Handle 41 Cases in May
Island police logged 41 cases in May under Police Chief Bob Park with 10 felonies and 31 misdemeanors. Felonies included burglaries thefts and drug offenses. misdemeanors covered disorderly conduct public intoxication marijuana possession and more. Officers issued 88 traffic citations and investigated seven accidents with four serious injuries. 82 other calls were handled, with 21 assists to others and nine with other agencies. Open doors or windows were found on six occasions and two suspicious persons plus one vehicle were checked.

Accident results in one death in Laguna Heights
A two vehicle crash Sunday, June 18 near Port Isabel left 60 year old Tillie Swartzendra Lackey dead at the scene after her 1969 Ford crossed the center line and struck a 1971 Ford pickup driven by Philip Lee Morris. Injured passenger Freddy L. Petty was treated and released. both at V Community and VCH. Funeral services are handled by Thomas-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito.
