Island Blast Kills Youth Injures Man At Station
A blast at George Landrum Enco Station on State Highway 100 two miles north of the Queen Isabella Causeway killed 17 year old John Mayths and injured owner Landrum who suffered third degree burns. Employee Phillip Morris escaped with minor injuries as the explosion blew off a roof and collapsed a wall after a chemical undercoating and welded tank fault.

Two local youths were injured in a motorcycle crash Sunday near Highway 100 beside Picniker Grocery. Elias Martinez 18 of Laguna Heights is unconscious in critical condition at Valley Baptist Hospital Harlingen. Mares Camacho 16 of Port Isabel sustained minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing.
