At press time no word from Port Isabel High School officials or the local school board about the May 20 gym wall collapse during a spring thunderstorm. Officials expect a report once the inquiry concludes and will outline rebuilding plans and strengthening of the west wall.

No Foul Play Seen For Atkins
Port Isabel death of Tom Atkins ruled natural causes by Police Chief C F Barter after he was found at home by a neighbor around 2 30 pm. Thomas Funeral directors and Justice Vera Myrick notified. He lived alone in a three room house and had served as caretaker for boat stalls. A son L D Atkins of San Antonio survives.

Shrimpers Asked To Watch For Navy Test Panels
A joint study by the U S Navy Oceanographic Office and the Port Isabel Coast Guard station seeks shrimpers to watch for red and white Navy test panels. Ex Navy SeaBee Ben Longtin handles panel placement and recovery near Port Isabel. Found panels should be returned overboard or reported to Longtin so panels can be replaced for the undersea corrosion study on barnacle and shellfish wear.

Life Guards Save Diana Botello From Drowning
Diana Botello ten was pulled from surf at Isla Blanco Park after stepping in a hole. Guards Arnaldo Gonzalez and Anthony Scotti applied mouth to mouth resuscitation and chest massage. She was treated at Mercy Hospital Brownsville and released. The Cameron County Park Board water safety program, led by Bob Massey, credited for the rescue.

Los Fresnos native Massey joins Port Isabel High as athletic director next year after a Hardin-Simmons degree and three years on the Port Isabel coaching staff. The lifeguard safety program began Memorial Day weekend with four guards on weekdays and six on weekends placed in two county parks from 8 am to 6 pm. They report encountering few serious incidents and all guards hold high school diplomas and Red Cross water safety certificates. Volunteers include Pat Hell Cleve Breedlove Arnaldo Gonzales John Fowler and Coast Guard members who help on weekends.

Girl Scout Day Camp Enrollment Nearly Doubles
Brownsville and Port Isabel Girl Scouts report about 97 enrollments by Friday for the Adventure Hill day camp in El Jardin Community Park from May 31 to June 4, almost doubling last year’s 57. Port Isabel Boat Goes Down Off Point Au Fer
The fishing vessel Lloyd, Jr. owned by Lloyd Guillot was rammed and sunk in four fathoms of water off Point Au Fer near the Morgan City Louisiana channel entrance. The accident occurred between 3 and 4 a m Monday June 7. All crew members Captain Lloyd Guillot Bigman Demetrio Martinez and Header Rafael are reported.
