At press time no word from Port Isabel High School officials or the local school board about the May 20 gym wall collapse during a spring thunderstorm. Officials expect a report once the inquiry concludes and will outline rebuilding plans and strengthening of the west wall.
Port Isabel death of Tom Atkins ruled natural causes by Police Chief C F Barter after he was found at home by a neighbor around 2 30 pm. Thomas Funeral directors and Justice Vera Myrick notified. He lived alone in a three room house and had served as caretaker for boat stalls. A son L D Atkins of San Antonio survives.
A joint study by the U S Navy Oceanographic Office and the Port Isabel Coast Guard station seeks shrimpers to watch for red and white Navy test panels. Ex Navy SeaBee Ben Longtin handles panel placement and recovery near Port Isabel. Found panels should be returned overboard or reported to Longtin so panels can be replaced for the undersea corrosion study on barnacle and shellfish wear.
Port Isabel gathers for Norberto Perez Sr birthday party hosted by his wife Luisa at their home on Sunday June 6. Neighbors and relatives including Joe Perez Barker Barker Galvan and Perez families attend, noting his milestone age of seventy.
Diana Botello ten was pulled from surf at Isla Blanco Park after stepping in a hole. Guards Arnaldo Gonzalez and Anthony Scotti applied mouth to mouth resuscitation and chest massage. She was treated at Mercy Hospital Brownsville and released. The Cameron County Park Board water safety program, led by Bob Massey, credited for the rescue.
Los Fresnos native Massey joins Port Isabel High as athletic director next year after a Hardin-Simmons degree and three years on the Port Isabel coaching staff. The lifeguard safety program began Memorial Day weekend with four guards on weekdays and six on weekends placed in two county parks from 8 am to 6 pm. They report encountering few serious incidents and all guards hold high school diplomas and Red Cross water safety certificates. Volunteers include Pat Hell Cleve Breedlove Arnaldo Gonzales John Fowler and Coast Guard members who help on weekends.
Brownsville and Port Isabel Girl Scouts report about 97 enrollments by Friday for the Adventure Hill day camp in El Jardin Community Park from May 31 to June 4, almost doubling last year’s 57. The program emphasizes outdoor skills with multiple unit leaders and a staff including Mrs. Jessie B. Cook and Mrs. Leroy Gasset.
The Texas Shrimp Association board met at the Dow Hotel in Freeport to select 1965 66 members for the Shrimp Association of America and review legislative actions from the present Texas legislature. Ed Dumas of Palacios is TSA president. local attendees include Bill Frisbee Bill Zimmerman L Reisman Wallace Beaudreaux Orleans Eymard and N A Hardee.
The Lower Rio Grande Valley Chamber of Commerce and Port Isabel Padre Island Area Chamber convened at El Toro Cafe on June 2. Jack Drake and Archie Taylor reviewed the year and outlined plans while Taylor reported on the Dallas Sports and Vacation Show drawing 7,000+ visitors and 35,000 pieces of literature. Drake cited research aims in agriculture water desalinization hope and Port of Brownsville export outlet. Larry Alien was re elected community chairman. new Port Isabel area members include Carrie Christensen Gregory Irejei Frederick E. Wright H. A. Eichman Twuart R. Carter Lighthouse Grocery and J F Karg Mission.
The fishing vessel Lloyd, Jr. owned by Lloyd Guillot was rammed and sunk in four fathoms of water off Point Au Fer near the Morgan City Louisiana channel entrance. The accident occurred between 3 and 4 a m Monday June 7. All crew members Captain Lloyd Guillot Bigman Demetrio Martinez and Header Rafael are reported.
The Harlingen Art Forum seeks a 1965 Beachcomber for next year and notes the missing 1964 Beachcomber. The 1965 Beachcomber Art Show will be July 18 with expanded exhibits at Isla Blanca Park including Picnic Pavilion and Recreation Pavilion.
At the regular Padre Beach Chamber of Commerce meeting more than 200 members attended. Officers elected for 1965 66 include Hal Roberts as president Bob Middleton as vice president and Bud Franke as secretary.
