Financing Of Small Storage Dams In The Rio Grande Valley

A bill would finance the construction of small storage dams on the Rio Grande below. It creates a $10 million loan program via the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for dams at Progreso San Benito headgates and Brownsville. Some valley water interests oppose the Reclamation Bureau deal, which would charge interest on land holdings above 160 acres.

Causeway Traffic Rises for Memorial Day Holiday

Traffic on the Queen Isabella Causeway to Padre Island remains on the rise with current totals at 60 548 cars and 3 522 more than last year. Memorial Day this year created a four day period for comparison versus five days last year. In 1956 the holiday crossing was 5 234 and 4 076 in 1957. Since the causeway opened, weekly totals reach 441 30.

Developer Joh L Tompkins announced a northward expansion of Padre Beach with a canal lined residential and resort area to accommodate pleasure craft. The project aims to three miles north, with a main canal off a under construction waterfront channel and ten side canals including a basin, serving residential and commercial sites on Padre Island.

Edwards travel plans include San Antonio and San Saba visit

The Texas Highway department invites bids for .263 miles of pavement between Brownsville and Port Brownsville. Bids will be opened in Austin on June 18.

Port Isabel Methodist Men Host Box Social and Fry Night

The Port Isabel Methodist Men invite members and wives to an installation night with a box social at the Educational Building on Thursday. The 1957 edition of the List of Lights and Other Marine Aids to Navigation on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts is available. More than four inches of rain drenched Port Isabel up to 2 pm Thursday with more rain expected before nightfall. Streets were flooded and conditions deteriorated as residents monitored flood risks.

Girls Day Camp Near Port Isabel Concludes

Port Isabel Girl Scouts Brownies and Mariners wrapped a weeklong camp at Camp Lula Sams Olmite today. Scouts traveled via Vatley Transit bus daily from Port Isabel departing at 9:15 and returning at 4:15. Meals were prepared by the troops and they joined swimming and outdoor activities during the session.

Sheriff Reports 132 Cases Cleared

Boonton Ho Fleming reports that his department handled cases and cleared 26 of them in May. Value of property recovered and returned to owners totaled $5,040.49. Prisoners kept in jail numbered 132. Cases by classification include burglary 6, aggravated assault 5, felony theft 9, misdemeanor theft 13, swindling 2, juvenile delinquents 12, auto theft 1, missing persons 1, miscellaneous criminal cases 102.

The Port Isabel Post Office will establish a civil service employment register with applications due by July 57. The postal position offers job security, retirement, life insurance, paid sick leave, vacations, entrance pay, automatic raises, promotions, a four hour five day week, night differential, overtime, holiday pay, and longevity increases.
