Texas Firm to Aid Space Shuttle Thermal Shield System
LTV Aerospace of Dallas Texas will design the leading edge thermal protection subsystem for the Space Shuttle orbiter under a subcontract? Rockwell International Space Division announced the award valued above 30 million dollars with initial work through 1977 and peak funding above 5 million dollars in the year. The contract covers the shuttle nose underside and wing leading edges facing temperatures up to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit during atmospheric reentry. The Space Shuttle program aims for reusable transportation with lower costs and broader payloads. Rockwell International is the prime contractor for NASA and a major multi-industry company.
