An Arbor Day memorial tree a red Bonenia orchid tree was planted at Port Isabel High School in memory of Judy Tietz who taught there for 24 years. The Driftwood Garden Club presented the tree to honor the young teacher who died in a two car collision at 24.

Merchants Marine State Bank will sell 1955 automobile license plates for Port Isabel area owners from February 1 to April 1. Only passenger car plates will be sold at the bank, as trucks are not handled. 1965 plates available during regular business hours.

Literacy Council To Defray Costs With Memberships

Instruction began Monday night January 26 at Port Isabel Literacy School under Rue ben Torres president. Classes were grouped with rooms assigned and Chart 1 instructions completed. A short business meeting followed to address teacher concerns and a motion to sell membership cards was approved. plans for a teacher meeting set for Monday February 1 before instruction. Registrations continue for those learning to speak read and write English.

Aloe Vera Growers Form New Association In Harlingen

The Aloe Vera Growers Association was completed at a January 25 meeting in Harlingen with 53 attendees. Fifteen members are fully qualified, a five member board elected, and Theo Hazelwood of Brownsville named president with Ernest B. Deford and Mrs Ethel L DeFord of Port Isabel as secretaries. The group aims to promote growing and marketing of aloe vera and related products.

Mrs. Dunson Attends Diocesan Meeting in Corpus Christi

Mrs. Ralph Dunson of Port Isabel attended the Diocesean Board meeting of the National Council of Catholic Women in Corpus Christi on Tuesday January 26. Bishop Mariano S. Thirty-eight Moms Lead Formidable Port Isabel March Fundraiser

Thirty eight Port Isabel mothers conducted a door to door March of Dimes drive raising over 400 dollars Monday evening. They canvassed the town and invited donations to support birth defect research. Several volunteers assisted including Mrs. Everett Saynes, Mrs. Warren Seals, and many others listed among the workers. Coast Guard Recovers Kershaw Beach Search After 7 Mile Trail

Coast Guard at Port Isabel reports case 49 65 ending at 5 30 a m after Captain Francis Kershaw and son Rodney went missing while riding the South Padre Island beach. A search party including Elmer Heinze and Coast Guard personnel found their disabled vehicle and a dying campfire 20 miles up the beach at 4 a m and returned to base exhausted but successful.

Beginning Of The End Of Dust Problem Seen After 15 Years Work

County Commissioner Ted Hunt said a 12:45 p.m. call from Congressman Kiki De la Garza announced a new federal budget plan providing 50,000 for dust study in Port Isabel. The funding marks the start of ending local dust problems after 15 years of effort. The budget also covers grants for Valley projects from Padre Island to Mercedes including maintenance, jetty repairs, and flow studies, with Amistad and Falcon dam supports and Padre Island National Seashore funds for roads and trails.

The committee appointed to draft the new area Chamber of Commerce set six immediate objectives and established basic dues for firms under and over 15000 gross yearly. The chamber name and a contest slogan were chosen. Plans for a fund drive will be announced pending board approval.

The Senior Class of Port Isabel High School will sponsor a fried chicken supper on Thursday January 25 at the Fire Hall from 6 to 8 PM. Senior mothers will cook and serve with French fries peas cake coffee or punch. Proceeds fund the annual senior trip with another supper planned in March.

Tarpons Top Warriors In Tight Rio Hondo Clash

The Tarpons led all game and beat the Santa Rosa Warriors 43 to 41 with strong defense and rebounding from Richard Green and Jim McAn lly. Friday Port Isabel fared better, trailing Rio Hondo by 15 but finishing short as Roy Bamrentez scored 16 and Roy Garza added one point. The Tarpons travel to face San Isidro next, while the B team beat Rio Hondo but lost to Santa Rosa 29 to 25.
