James Hammett 79, a Santa Rosa resident, drowned last Monday while surf fishing in a known spot after reportedly falling into a hole. He is survived by his widow Ruth two sons Walter and James Jr two daughters three sisters and ten grandchildren. The Red Cross secured emergency leave for James Jr from Thailand. funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Santa Rosa with burial at Restlawn Memorial Park.
Residents of Los Fresnos will host a two day Country Fair with old fashioned days and attire on February 24 and 25. The event invites participation from the community and features period costumes such as long dresses bonnets striped overalls hammer pockets and straw hats.
Obituary notices report the deaths of Burnell 67 of Port Isabel and Duff 90 of Laguna Vista. Burnell, a former mayor and school board member, died fishing in the Port Isabel ship channel. Duff, a Laguna Vista resident, died in Mercy Hospital after illness. services held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burnell buried in Port Isabel Cemetery. Duff buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Jersey City.
Mayor Lea F. Sanders proclaims March 11 as Public School Week in Port Isabel urging residents to visit local schools during open house events at Derry Elementary Junior-Senior High Garriga Elementary March 6 7 1967 to support education and community involvement.
County officials from 109 Texas counties gathered at Texas A M University for the ninth annual County Judges and Commissioners Conference on the campus in February 1917. Cameron County delegates included Commissioners Ted R Hunt Johnny Cavazos and Adolph Thomas Jr The program focused on current issues facing county officials such as mental health code criminal procedure code economic development county government study and highway right of way and construction. The three day event was sponsored by the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas and Texas A M University Agricultural Extension Service.
Island Shell Fair opens Sunday attracting 12 000 to 20 000 visitors to Isla Blanca Civic Center from 9 am to 6 pm. Exhibits include marine life displays, sea shells from around the world, and a Hall of Fame entry featuring a Fiji Golden Cowrie and a Conus glorm mars Chemnitz.
The Delta Kappa Gamma held its annual Scholarship Tea on February 11, 1967 at Mrs. John H. Humter’s home in Brownsville. Recipients Guadalupe Mendieta, Socorro Saenz, and Graciela de Pena were present. A program on educational change featured principal Jean Eekhoff and speakers Bess Walton, Socorro Saenz, Graciela Pena, Elizabeth McCullum, Ula Laakso, and Kelen Carl with notes on Our Town and teaching methods.
Cameron County Commissioners discussed redistricting to align precincts with state senatorial districts affecting five precincts. Precinct 7 Port Isabel holds 12 percent of voters, Precinct 2 Brownsville about 30 percent, San Benito Precinct 3 about 2 percent, and Harlingen Precinct 4 about 36 percent. The court also advanced a rabies control ordinance requiring vaccination, leash rules, and dog impounding with fines up to 200 dollars.
