One Third More Area Growth Possible Before Expansion

Cameron County Fresh Water Supply District No. 1 reports the Port Isabel area uses about 1 million gallons daily in July and August, leaving room for one third more growth before new facilities are needed. The district, created in 1950 and organized in 1951, serves 35,400 acres with a plant capacity of 1.5 to 2 million gallons daily, funded by bonds of 1951 and 1959, and relies on Falcon Lake water via a long aqueduct system. Continuous financial strain, delinquent taxes, and limited public interest challenge operations despite progress and staffing.
