Wanderer Merlin Fischer sails toward South America from Port Isabel

Merlin H Fischer, 46, owner and captain of the 35 foot trimaran TRIDENT tied at Port Isabel Marina, plans to sail Gulf and Caribbean coasts to South America. He has cruised the Mississippi and Intercoastal Canal, weathered Hurricane Hilda, and intends to roam freely visiting islands, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas before possibly returning to the United States. Fischer is a Mayville Wisconsin native and WWII veteran who studied at the University of Wisconsin.

DAV seeks to form Port Isabel chapter for veterans

The Disabled American Veterans Fifth Regional District aims to establish a Port Isabel chapter pending sufficient eligible veterans. Shell Club to Present Aware at Padre Island Show

The Fifth Annual Shell Fair of the South Padre Island Shell Club on February 27 28 will award the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia prize for mollusk exhibits. Dr R Tucker Abbott will be chief judge. The event at Isla Blanca Park Recreation Pavilion expects 10000 visitors, staging on Feb 27 and public viewing Feb 28.

Pipkin Named to Five Texas Committee Posts

Representative Maurice Pipkin was named by Speaker Ben Barnes to five standing committees for the current session. He will chair Commerce and Manufactures and serve as Vice-Chairman of Appropriations, joining Judiciary, Banks and Banking, and Rules. Barnes praised Pipkin for merit and long service to South Texas and the state.

Port Isabel Winter Visitors Club reports 156 members present with Michigan leading all states at every meeting. Michigan states 26 attendees. Iowa close behind with 23. Ancient skeletons found near Roy's Boat Works on North Shore Drive

Two roughly 100 to 400 year old human skeletons were uncovered during trenching for a pipeline on North Shore Drive near Roy's Boat Works. A skull study by Dr. J A Hockaday notes worn teeth, copper buttons, and possible Indian ties to Port Isabel. Carbon-14 tests await results in about five months.

The next regular social dinner program of the B and P W Club has been moved to Thursday February 18. The Board of Directors will host the ham supper at the Firehall and members will prepare and serve the dinner. Adkins plans a Yucatan visit for photography, then a Rotary district meeting in Monterrey before returning to Port Isabel.

Literacy Council Is A Success Teachers Needed

The Port Isabel Literacy Council reports strong participation with adult pupils seeking to learn English. Classes run 7:30 to 9 p.m. in groups of six to eight with two teachers per group. Volunteers are urged to sign up as winter visitors depart, and new members are asked to purchase a 35 membership card or a 1 card.
