Prisoner beaten in jail faces new charges in Port Isabel
Port Isabel man George Fissner, previously injured in a jail beating on Oct. 2, was arrested Dec. 24 for carrying a concealed weapon, driving while intoxicated, and discharging a firearm within city limits. Police recovered a loaded .38 revolver after a reported yard gun incident. he was jailed in Cameron County pending bond.

Police Probe Home Burglary In Port Isabel
Police investigate a robbery at the home of Aurora Garbarena in Port Isabel. A jewelry box valued at about $100 and a radio were taken. Entry was gained through an open front door. Seven juveniles and an adult were questioned and released.

County Dads Set Vote On Advertising Levy
Cameron County voters will go to the polls January 28 to vote on a five cent per hundred dollar valuation tax to fund advertising the Valley to tourists and northern industry. The proposal, urged by Clyde Fincher and Carl Gibbons, was voted out by the commission. The election may be held with a larger election to reduce costs.

County plan to spend advertising funds for commissioners
The five member county commission approved a plan to use about 125000 dollars for advertising the commissioners to choose. Fincher noted state law allows a five member board to decide spending of such funds. All members voted yes except Thomas who abstained citing unfamiliarity with the proposal. Some attorneys say state law prohibits counties from using county funds to promote a region. Only Cameron County and Brownsville may be promoted with county funds. The Valley Chamber of Commerce originated the idea, arguing the Valley lags behind Florida Arizona and California in tourism and industry advertising.
