Cameron County Considers Hospital District Study

Cameron County commissioners meet at 10 a.m. Friday to explore forming a hospital district amid pleas from private hospitals for higher indigent-care payments. County Auditor Jack Snoeberger doubts such a district can be created to pay private hospitals. some officials favor a county owned hospital. Deputy Londge of Port Isabel resigns to join the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department as a resident deputy for Port Isabel and the bay area, effective Monday, Dec. 11. Mercy Hospital attorney Bascom Cox says three major Cameron County hospitals support a district, with a special act required and a maximum tax of 75 cents per $100 valuation.

Hospitals in Cameron County issue indigent care ultimatum

The Mercy Dolly Winstant and Valley Baptist hospitals in Brownsville announce they can no longer absorb the county’s medically indigent patients on current funding. They cite a smaller budget than Hidalgo County, lack of agreement on indigent formulas, and slow reimbursements as key reasons, saying county action is required.

Port Isabel Considers 1 Per Cent Sales Tax Referendum

Port Isabel voters face a Tuesday election to decide a one per cent city sales tax. Mayor Leo F. Sanders argues the tax is urgent to fund street and sewer bonds and hurricane losses. Police identified the suspect as jack webb about 50 and arrested him last week on burglary of an automobile. justice of the peace set a 1500 dollar bond. owner melvin derr valued the stolen hand tools at about 60 dollars. police said a woman and another man were questioned in the same connection.

Warrant Issued For Esto Fleet Captain Paprocki

A murder warrant was issued last Thursday for Frank A. Paprocki master of the Esto Fleet's FV Esto. The case links to the shooting deaths of R. J. Tynaql of Matamurns and an unidentified shrimp fisherman. No location for Paprocki or the vessel has been reported.

How They Voted In a record off-year turnout

Cameron Lenaty voters elected Henry Sanchez to the legislative post vacated by Rep. Maurice Pipkin. The total 12 445 votes doubled earlier expectations with Henry Sanchez 7 540 to Manny Sanchez 5 106. The two Sanchezs led in the election and Henry Sanchez likely takes office in Austin.
