Local Schools Open August 31 With August 3 Registration

Port Isabel schools open August 31 with registration August 3. Students must be six on or before September 1 to enroll. Birth certificates requested for first graders. Last year’s attendance averaged 93.1 percent. Holidays include Labor Day, Christmas, Charro Day, Easter, and end of six five weeks in May.

Schol Calendar Highlights for Fall Semester

The calendar lists faculty meeting on August 30 at 19 AM in the Jr. High Auditorium. August 31 covers registering and checking out books. Regular classes start September 1 with a Labor Day holiday on September 5. October 12 marks the first six weeks, followed by Thanksgiving mass on November 24 and Thanksgiving holiday on November 23.

Hurricanes miss Valley since 1887 despite 257 near misses

A Weather Bureau report details hurricane and tropical storm activity entering the U S mainland from Brownsville to Cape Hatteras from 1896 to 1954. It notes 70 full hurricanes on a map, but only two events affect the Valley since 1896, with major storms in Florida and the 1954 Atlantic seaboard hurricane causing vast damage.

New Chiropractic Clinic Opens in San Benito

Dr. Seymour Fischer opens a chiropractic clinic at 803 N. Sam Houston Street San Benito with wife Geraldyne assisting. The residence was converted into the clinic and appointments are being taken. Fischer has a year in Debenport Town practice and a doctor of chiropractic from Palmer School. Geraldyne Myrick Fischer also holds a Palmer degree and hails from Port Isabel.

Shrimp Fiesta Plans Near Completion at Port Isabel

Port Isabel readies for the third annual Shrimp Fiesta with the Forrest Royal destroyer arriving for public tours on two days. A Saturday August 27 dance and island presentation are set with ticket sales through local merchants. A street parade feature includes a silver tray prize for the antique car division as decorating efforts expand with banners and new store displays.

Fleet Destroyer Forrest Royal to Visit annual Fiesta

The Forrest Royal will be docked for inspection at Port Isabel during the Shrimp Fiesta weekend, with public access on September 3 and 4 from 1 to 4 PM. A street parade features a landing force demonstration and a huge crowd is expected. The festival includes dances, coronation, midway shows, and a Sunday boat parade with blessing ceremonies.

Polio Ward Admits Valley Children From Port Isabel

Two Port Isabel children enter the Valley Baptist hospital polio ward in the past days. Four year old child of Mr and Mrs Leo Fabacher and eight month old Lisa Harris daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Harris are among the recent admissions. Also the 24 year old son of Mr and Mrs James Bell is in the ward. the Bells once lived in Port Teabel now reside in Loe Freenoa.

Driver Licenses Examiner to Visit Port Isabel

Port Isabel will host Joe Garza, license examiner, on Wednesday September 7 to accept driver license applications. Local Police Department confirms official will handle applications at that time.
