The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce announces a Last Chance Dance on Saturday April 15 at the Community Center starting at 8:00 PM. Admission is free with free movies and music. tickets for a motor boat and trailer donation prize will be available, with the drawing at midnight.

Tower Headlines Local Polls With Narrow Lead

John G. Tower led the senatorial race in Port Isabel on Tuesday with 129 of 244 ballots in a light turnout. Bill Blakeley followed with 54, Henry Gonzalez 28, Will Wilson 22, and Maury Maverick 7. four ballots were mutilated, election judge Vere Myrick said.

Shrimp Fiesta Directors Meet at Port Isabel Center

A meeting of past Shrimp Fiesta directors and interested citizens is set for Monday at 7 30 p m at the Port Isabel Community Center. Brownsville participants will join as plans for next year’s celebration are discussed. The gathering is called by Harry Sexton, president of Shrimp Fiesta Incorporated.

W C Wolverton Hurt in Highway 107 Crash

Willard C Wolverton of Port Isabel was injured when a truck hit his road construction equipment about two miles east of Edinburg on Highway 107 during heavy rain. He was admitted to Grandview Hospital with a broken collar bone. The truck driver Jose F Lopez of McAllen received emergency treatment and was released.

Den 3 of Cub Scouts met Tuesday afternoon at Mrs. Jim Maddox home with mothers Mrs Maddox and Mrs Jack Hughes. David Privett elected denner and Ricky Hughes assistant denner. Cubs wrote thank you notes to Boling Texas cubs for a leaf collection. They plan a visit to Harlingen Air Force Base Observatorium on April 15. Ten cubs and two guests attended. District Track Meet At Sams In Brownsville

Brownsville hosts a district track and field meet at Sams Memorial Stadium with Rio Hondo Roma in the district lineup. Officials and coaches meet at 12 45 p m with events to start at 1 p m. Preliminaries run to 3 30 and finals from 7 30 to 9 05. Winners advance to the regional in Victoria on April 21.

HAFB To Get 6-month Reprieve

Rep. Joe Kilgore wires The Port Isabel Press that Harlingen Air Force Base will not close until December 1962 after a six month delay. Flying training for navigators continues through December with Kennedy officials previously announcing a June shutdown. Kilgore cites time to pursue alternate uses such as a veterans hospital or Border Patrol academy and notes the Port Isabel station may shut in June without new development.

Mrs. Floyd Elected President of Point Isabel School Board

At a Tuesday meeting of the Point Isabel Independent School District Board of Trustees Beatrice Floyd and Leo F. Sanders took the oath of office after ballot correction. Floyd was named president with Sabas Gonzales as vice president and Roy Byrd as secretary. Tina Barrera, Notary Public, administered the oath. The meeting also authorized payment actions.

Kilgore Pursues Port Isabel Air Station for Border Patrol Academy

Congressman Joe M. Kilgore actively seeks to repurpose the Port Isabel Naval Auxiliary Air Station for a Border Patrol academy. Incumbents Re elected To School Board In Local Vote

Incumbents Leo F. Speck Sanders and Mrs Beatrice Floyd were re elected to the school board for three years. A total of 656 ballots were cast with Sanders leading at 253 votes, Floyd at 333, George College 229, E J LeBlanc 182, Jim Carey 133, Robert Kirkpatrick 7 and two write ins. Ballots canvassed at the regular board meeting last Tuesday evening.

IGNC Assembly Waiver Lets Mexicans Enter Without Passports

The International Good Neighbor Council XIV Assembly in Austin April 10-13 will grant Mexican nationals with IGNC cards and their families a waiver of passports and visas from April 9 to 14. The waiver is coordinated by U S authorities in Monterrey and affects travelers entering via Brownsville Laredo El Paso and other border points.

Game and Fish Commission Meets in Austin on Reef and Regulation

The Texas Game and Fish Commission holds a quarterly session in Austin on April 7 with items including temporary county proclamations under new legislative authority, shell dredging permits on the coast, a proposed Mata dor grazing lease, a water pollution report, quail hatchery results, reef status at Port Isabel Port Aransas Freeport and proposed reefs at Galveston and Pass Callo, plus a request for an additional reef near Beaumont Port Arthur.

Wildlife exhibit to headline Valley Boat and Sport Show

Harley H Berg of the Texas Game and Fish Commission will supervise an educational wildlife display at the Valley Boat and Sport Show to be held April 19 to 23 at Wood Airport. The exhibit features birds reptiles fishes and mammals of Texas and is a free entertainment feature along with boat and fishing displays. Cedric F Wood of Donna chairs the activity and invites sportsmen pilots from across the state to fly in and tour Mexico Falcon Lake or the Gulf.
