The thirty seventh annual Deep Sea Round-Up sponsored by Port Aransas Boatman Inc starts July 11 for three days of sport fishing. Contests are split into Bay surf Inshore and Offshore divisions with judging at Fisherman’s Wharf and prizes for marlin tarpon and sharks.
The fishing scene shows tarpon activity on good days with the Wharf Cat often mentioned as lucky. In mid June Glenn Ard on Sirrah II landed a 4814 pound king and ling up to 75 pounds. The Blue Heron reported a 92 pound dog snapper and a blue marlin sighting drift fishing. North Jetty yielded one foot ball sharks and early morning efforts produced better results.
The University of Texas will add Dr. Maurice Ewing, renowned geophysicist, to its Marine Biomedical Institute in Galveston after 24 years at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Observatory. He may bring 30 scientists and the 250 foot research vessel Robert D. Conrad. UT Regents approve 1.5 million for facilities and 3 million for Port Aransas expansion to broaden marine programs. Plans include integrating Galveston and Port Aransas institutes and a joint marine biomedicine and physical sciences program.
The record lists fishing categories for the 1972 event spanning May 1 through May 21 with blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish noted as key targets.
Authorities have yet to uncover motives or suspects in the murder of Randy Farenthold, a wealthy sportsman. His body was found bound to a cement block in the surf south of Port Aransas, last seen June 4, with the investigation led by Chief Deputy George Miller and supported by the FBI and Texas Rangers. Local fishermen reported the discovery early June 6.
The schedule lists events at Fisherman's Wharf from July 11 to July 13. Activities include Blessing of the Fleet, Piggy Perch for children, fish landings and judging, and prize awards at the Community Building. Attendees are asked to avoid crowding the dock during busy fish landings.
