The 38th Port Aransas Deep Sea Round-Up runs July 11 to 12 with a blessing at 6:45 am at Port Aransas harbor and a boat parade to the jetties. Piggy Perch kids event 9 to 10 am at City Dock and fishing landings plus judging 1 to 7 pm. Awards at 9 pm Wednesday at the Community Building.
The Texas championship billfish tournament unfolds June 30 to July 1 with a weigh station at Fisherman’s Wharf. Fishermen compete for top weights and bragging rights in a seaside event drawing anglers from regional clubs and sponsors.
The Port Aransas Lions Club hosted a weekend for 15 boys from the Texas State School for the Blind in Austin, with 5 teachers and staff. Activities included a fish fry, meals at Young Life and Malibu, and a deep sea trip aboard the Marlin Queen, where 28 kings, jackfish, and a shark were caught. One kingfish stole a rod, later recovered. organizers Floyd McClannahan Paul Bowen and Lions President C L Castor led the outing, which the group plans to make annual.
The Port Aransas Planning Commission recommends beach use rules to the City Council mirroring Nueces County measures with changes. Measures include driving on main beach roads staying 50 feet from water, banning littering and barriers, and fishermen disposing of catches. A July 10 council discussion is planned. A separate proposal seeks voluntary overnight camping zones along the Gulf beach within city limits.
