The 1974 national bakers group report shows wholesale bread profit margins rising to more than a cent and a half per loaf while ingredient costs stay low. Wheat prices fall about 23 percent this year, yet bread prices remain steady, leaving farmers puzzled by the paradox of a bumper crop and rising baker profits.
University of Wisconsin sociologists Robert Hauser and William Sewell report that earning differences after college hinge on student ability and background. Analyzing 2,000 Wisconsin males over two decades, they found college type accounts for only 2.4 percent of earnings variation, while high academic performance and aspirations predict strong outcomes regardless of school.

Miss Marjorie Heminover of Bloomington became the bride of Kenneth Kirstein of Normal in a double ring ceremony before 350 guests at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Chatsworth. The Rev. W C Burmeister officiated the candlelight ceremony. The couple planned a Florida honeymoon and will reside in Normal. The bride and groom are employed with Country Mutual.
Dr. Robert Cooley, chief of pediatric dentistry at Northwestern University and Children’s Memorial Hospital, warns prolonged bottle use in 18 to 30 month olds leads to severe decay. He notes decay can require 700 to 900 dollars in surgery under general anesthesia and may affect permanent teeth. he urges weaning to a cup by age one and limited sweets. Also reports the death of architect John Ogden Merrill at 79 in Colorado Springs.
