Three youths were arrested Sunday night in Pontiac on narcotics possession charges by the Sheriff’s Department and the City Pair. Chief Deputy William Fry said the suspects were taken into custody Sunday for marijuana possession. Named were Thomas G. Leonhardt 19 Tasca Victor F. Conway 20 Kankakee and Joseph L. Savage 19 Streator. They remain in jail awaiting today’s court appearance.
Mary Wheeler Hendricks, 71, of Chicago, died May 22 at Ravenswood Hospital after three weeks as a patient. A former Pontiac resident, she was the daughter of Mer and Mrs Haugh Wheeler of rural Pontiac and widow of Louis P. Hendricks who died December 22, 1960. Survived by four Chicago children, two brothers Thomas Wheeler of Odell and Lawranes Wheeler of Naperville, and four sisters Helen Krower of Ulica and Cecelia Ballard of Morris.
Nearly 300000 entries were received for TODAY's Man On The Moon Contest seeking the exact moment the first American astronaut touches the moon. The sweepstakes drew as many entries as there are miles to the moon and as many residents in Cape Kennedy area Florida, spanning all 50 states plus Canada Mexico England Holland and Puerto Rico. Entrants paid over 20000 in postage and the event was co sponsored by about 200 newspapers including the Pontiac Daily Leader. The contest devised by Gannett ended May 1 with top prize for guessing the precise year month day hour minute and second of the first moonwalk.
A bridal shower for Linda Wrightam drew 32 guests in the Pontiac National Bank community room on Sunday May 25. Hosts included Mrs. Vista Barrett and others with gifts assisted by Miss Connie Field and Miss Jeanne Dietiker. Wrightam plans to marry John Erickson of Chicago.
Chicago wheat corn and oats prices listed with No 2 hard yellow 1.324n No 2 soft red 1.28n and various yellow soybeans. Peoria hogs 2,900 head with 200-2385b butchers at 26.50 27.50, sow ranges 22.00-22.75, steers 32.50-35.00, heifers 31.50-34.25, and other weights in the 29.00-31.50 range.
State Police ticketed Leonard Clark 19 of Chenoa for improper left turn after his vehicle collided with Avalon Mahr 48 of Minonk on Route 116 near U S 66 at 8 40 a m. Schroder investigated. Damage valued at 200 to the Mahr car and 150 to Clark’s 1967 auto.
Mark Dawson, 17, of Pontiac appeared May 27 before Judge R. Burnell Phillips in Livingston County Circuit Court General Division on illegal possession of narcotic drugs. He did not waive indictment and case was dismissed in court but remanded to Magistrate Division for preliminary hearing. Dawson and four others including Bruce A. Adamson Ronald L. Harrison Lawrence A. Hahn John A. Tippell Sandra E. Hodge were arrested by the Sheriff's Department and City Police. all free on bond and slated for preliminary hearing before Judge Lloyd Gutel.
Joseph A. Schoder, 74, pled guilty to taking indecent liberties with a child in General Division court before Judge R Burnell Phillips. His case was continued to June 10 for petition for probation release. He remains jailed in lieu of bond after May 18 arrest by the Sheriff's Department.
Chatsworth Lions Club met at the Coral Cup on Monday May 26 with 13 members present. Nominees for next year include Dan Kyburz as president and Robert Stuckey as first vice president. A dunking machine was planned for the Fourth of July and a Boys State rider plus a $50 Little League donation were approved.
City Police investigated two accidents on Sunday. Donald R. Brown, 21, was treated at St. James Hospital after a two vehicle crash at Reynolds and Court Streets. Arthur F. Carlson, 74, stopped for a stop sign on Court, then pulled into Brown’s path and was ticketed for failure to yield. Gerald Thorson, 26, backed into a parked car in Cousin Fred lot at 2:40 pm, causing slight damage. no ticket issued to Wade’s 25 year old driver Louis R. Wade of Dwight.
Weekend arrests led to four individuals taken to County Jail. A 16-year-old Fairbury youth was arrested Friday for curfew violation and no driver's license and is free on bond. Milota and Loeffler, both 18 from St. Paul Mina, face liquor possession charges and were released to military authorities. Brennan, 19 from St. Louis, was arrested on illegal transportation of liquor and released after posting bond.
L B Nieswander Melvin and Beverly Dale Crowe of Fairbury obtain a marriage license. James Albert Lowery of St Louis Missouri and Marsha Ellen Johnsen of Blackstone also receive a marriage license.
