The British House of Commons voted 343 to 180 to suspend capital punishment, arguing the record did not prove deterrence. In Springfield Illinois, DDT sales and use will be banned from January 1 except by special permit under state pesticide control, permits issued by Agriculture and Public Health directors for urgent pest threats.
Lt Theodore Bilar of the Chicago fire department was arrested at his home on charges of grand theft for allegedly transferring 3000 dollars worth of sheep and hog casings from Calumet Harbor waterfront to a food processing firm official who planned to buy the goods at a fraction of wholesale. He had been under three days of surveillance and is to appear in Circuit Court on December 29. The case comes amid a waterfront theft crackdown involving 68 arrests this shipping season.
AP reports on Bill of Rights Day signatures gathered by Dave Shapiro of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. He spoke to 75 people. 19 signed, 55 did not recognize the document. Only 2 of 10 in a local club signed. four signees agreed with all but the right to keep and bear arms.

Forrest reports the Kay Karcher Fund total at 4,557.98 with community groups including the Forrest American Legion and Auxiliary Lions Club FSW Quarterback Club Church Women’s groups Woman’s Club Women’s League and KSW Student Council sponsoring activities. Cash donations total 1,799.16 and are still arriving. Kay Karcher, patient since December 1 at Fairbury Hospital, is expected to return home for Christmas after earlier treatment at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago since October 12 for a rare disease.
The memorial service for Floyd Lighty was held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church with Rev. Clare Nave officiating. Washington AP says federal agencies are not receiving enough information on household accidents and injuries. A congressional subcommittee warned that adequate data is essential for proper programs protecting the public from hazardous products and preventing avoidable accidents.

Pontiac Commandery No. 85 held its annual inspection at the Masonic Temple. Sir Knight Forest G. McDaniel officiated as inspection officer. Delbert F. Bennett received the Order of the Temple. 34 Sir Knights in full uniform attended. A community dinner followed for 65 Sir Knights and guests. Clarence E. Asper welcomed attendees, and Haldane Wesley Bean presented a tribute to the Illinois Knights Templar Home for the Aged. Pontiac also earned a district trophy for knightings in 1969.
Hazel Ward 7a of Riverside a former Gridley Flanagan area resident died Friday afternoon at her home Funeral held at 2 p m today at the Presbyterian Church Gilman Burial in Gilman Cemetery She was born August 3 1895 in Flanagan daughter of Charles and Margaret Kerr Bamber She married Dr Harris C Ward on October 1 1928 at Ikureka He died July 21 1933 Surviving are two sisters Ora Mundschenk San Diego California and Ethel Ward West Hollywood California She was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters
