John W. Schaefer of Graymont was reelected president of the Livingston County Agricultural Fair Association at a directors meeting after the 1973 annual meeting on December 14. Vernon Roth was named vice president. Larry Zabel as secretary treasurer. Five new directors were chosen for 1973 74. Dates for the Livingston County Fair and 4 H Club Show were set for July 31 August 1 and August 2 with committees formed for 4 H program reassessment and rental policy.
Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmer quietly marked their 60th anniversary at 215 E Water St. They wed on December 18, 1912 in Saunemin. The couple’s children are Robert and Mrs. Clara Russell, with eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Their former attendants were Johnie Zimmer and Miss Tressie Lee. Mr. Zimmer, a retired farmer, also worked at Wrights Furniture for several years.
Youths from Waldo Flanagan and Meadows Mennonite churches join 300 plus youths from across Illinois for the 1972 Illinois Youth Institute at Metamora Mennonite Church December 27 to 29. Theme It's the Real Thing. Seminars on Christian living cover school life devotional life government vocation church education service and youth-adult relations. Co-hosts include Metamora Roanoke and Calvary of Washington churches. Sponsored by Illinois Conference Mennonite Church General Conference Mennonite Church and General Conference Mennonite Churches of Illinois. Planned by youth from both conferences with coordinators James Dunn and Donald Nester.
Pike Home Extension held a Christmas party and meeting at McDonald’s in Fairbury with a private smorgasbord. Forty three members and guests attended. Mr and Mrs Virgil Stewart of rural Chenoa showed photos from a Russia People to People tour last summer.
In a private Elysee interview President Pompidou urged high level consultations to align U S Europe and Japan on monetary trade and political goals for 1973. He warned money and trade questions are secondary to shared political objectives and urged common action by major powers to ensure Europe’s security and economic unity.
Livingston County residents not working may seek job assistance through the Dept. of Public Aid. Since September, Illinois State Employment Service workers from Bloomington have aided local applicants, with about 40 percent of seekers placed. The program aims to find suitable jobs and keep people employed, with cooperation from local employers and caseworkers to handle refusals.
