The Skinner-Trost Auxiliary met in the Community Building Tuesday night to hold a memorial for Mrs. Josie Weller who died in October and to drape the charter in her memory. They planned Christmas baskets for shut-ins and sent donations totaling 23 to veterans and child welfare causes. A junior members’ Christmas party was held amid about 5000 unspent from prior funds while local officials discussed ambulance purchases and trauma program details with attendees including Rex Conger from St. Francis Hospital.
The city council approved Campbell's motion to accept Jones Buick bid for the facelift as Aldermen Keith and Jacobs dissented. They also endorsed creating a pond east of town for ice skating and noted Ray Sandifer will prepare it for youth use. The Pontiac City Council voted unanimously to grant free parking downtown. The meter maid will be on Christmas vacation from today through December 26, allowing drivers to park for free during the period.
Congressman Leslie C. Arends introduced a bill in the House to establish the Washington Square National Historic Site in Ottawa. He cited its Lincoln Douglas debate legacy and said federal action would protect and preserve the square in perpetuity while positioning Ottawa for national attention during the 1976 Bicentennial.
Funeral services for Blas Olveda 82 will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Fairbury with Rev. Charles Clifford officiating. Burial follows at Arcola Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday 7 to 9 p.m. at Duffy Pils Memorial Home with an 8 p.m. prayer service. Olveda, a Fairbury resident for eight years, died Saturday night at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Chicago. He was born March 26, 1892 in Mexico and was a World War I veteran with 35 years at a steel mill and 20 years as a truck gardener. He is survived by his nephew Miguel Salinas of Fairbury and other nieces and nephews.
Saunemin Elementary will present its Christmas show Thursday December 20 at 7 30 p m in the high school gymnasium. All students from kindergarten through eighth grade will participate with Bill Immke and Gordon Steffens on guitars and Carol Immke on bells. Theme is An Old Fashioned Christmas. Public invited with no admission charge.
