Burger condemns penal system as crime breeder

Chief Justice Warren E. Burger warned in Philadelphia that longer prison terms and bigger police won't curb crime. He said the harsh American penal system itself is a major source of rising crime, stating that two-thirds of inmates are in the system at any given time.

$1.86 Million I-55 Contract Awarded to Chicago Firms

A contract valued at 1,859,641 dollars for 1.06 miles of grading and drainage on I-55 near Lexington is awarded to Thomas M. Madden Co. and The Schloss Co. in Chicago as part of Ogilvie's 1972 road program. It includes two bridges for I-35 over Mackinaw River and two for I-55 over Turkey Creek plus a grade separation and approaches two miles southwest of Lexington.
