In 1820 Frederick Accum emerged as an early consumer protector. His book on adulterations in bread beer wine tea coffee and other domestic foods exposed dangerous practices. Though praised by some as a pioneer he faced disgrace lost his business and left London after naming irresponsible manufacturers and merchants.
A seven year old New York City girl, Caroline Ranald, wrote to Lionel trains’ makers claiming girls like trains too. Fundimensions, a General Mills subsidiary, read her note and will include girls in its advertising to shed the toy’s boys only image.
